New York is the first stop on a worldwide tour that will eventually include Berlin and Mumbai. Over time there will be three labs that will travel the globe simultaneously. Each will have it's own structure, be designed by a different architect and hold it's own theme pertaining to urban living. The three labs will end up traveling the globe for six years, with city curators being the main target audience in each city, along with leaders in the fields of architecture, art, design, technology, education and science. The labs will host workshops, games, performances and film screenings. All of which will be free.
As per Mr. van der Leer, the founding curator of the labs, "We wanted the Guggenheim Labs to be in the middle of an urban environment where people live, work and hang out." The New York lab theme is Confronting Comfort. Over 100 events are slated for the NY lab all centering on the theme.
Be sure to check out the lab before it closes on October 16, 2011. It is located in First Park at Houston Street and 2nd Avenue. Bow-Wow, the architectural atelier that helped build the space, have to be commended for their reinterpretation of an empty lot. Although they left the graffiti walls, they were able to transform the T-shaped space into a usable and enticing hang out spot. Even if eco-urban living isn't your thing, at least go and check out the garden cafe!
