The Best AR Campaigns of 2012

Thank you to Simply Zesty for sharing the Best Augmented Reality Campaigns of 2012. AR became a fast trend this year, and so many brands tried to get in on the action. Simply Zesty compiled a great list of the ones that worked. There are some great picks in the list, but here are my personal highlights:

BBC Frozen Planet

To reach a wider audience, locals in New Jersey, Illinois and California were treated to an AR installation which placed them in the heart of the polar regions. Here they could interact with some of the wildlife like penguins, polar bears and whales.

BBC Frozen Planet Augmented Reality, NJ, IL, CA - USA by Appshaker from Appshaker Ltd on Vimeo.

Nokia and Angry Birds

It seems to be impossible to avoid a promotion featuring the limbless birds, but Nokia Australia created this campaign which allowed passersby to kick the birds into the screen. They could also take part in a virtual dance-off with singer and songwriter Timomatic and help a lost kangaroo find his way home.

2012 U.S. Election

Another Blippar project, this time focusing on Obama’s campaign for re-election. Simply ‘blipp’ a five dollar bill or any Obama logo to get an interactive experience with the Obama campaign.

Daring To Be Different - Guerrilla Marketing Campaigns That Worked

I love recognizing Guerrilla Marketing campaigns that work. Whenever a client comes to BENG! asking for Guerrilla Marketing, we first ask why. What are you looking to accomplish and is this really the best median of communication. Don't get me wrong, Guerrilla Marketing campaigns are great; but you have to realize what you are trying to attain and be smart about it. There are so many examples of bad campaigns, you need to steer clear of Guerrilla unless you are certain you know what you are doing. Flash mobs are a great example. Super popular for a while - it seemed like everyone had booked a space in Times Square, NYC.

Here are some great examples of Guerrilla done right:

Mr. Kipling Cake-To-Go Dispenser
The cake brand lined up 130,000 freshly baked cakes to give away in several locations throughout the UK. Cake enthusiasts could head to any of the installation boards, press a button and release their slice of cake.

Talking Domino's Pizza Scooter
Helping to create visibility of the brand in The Netherlands, this low budget campaign is genius. The brand hi-jinxed some scooters and modified them to shout the Domino's brand name whenever the driver would shift gears. Not only turned heads, but also created some laughs too!

Frontline Mall Ad
A local pet store chain had a limited budget to get the word out about their de-ticking product. Deciding on a Big Splash for their strategy, they decided to decal the floor of 3 popular malls. The idea is that there is more going on with your pet than you can see close up. When walking over the floor you notice that you are walking on a giant ad of a dog and Frontline, however when you change the floor you are on, you see that the people act as fleas walking all over the dog. Funny, smart and catchy, people will remember this one!

StartUp Watch: 3 Startups For Events

1. Planana
Planana is a ticketing and promotion dashboard for your event. There are so many ticketing sites out there, and this is not one that stands out for that. It is their promotion service that peaked my interest. Planana helps you set up your own event dashboard, and a reward system for your attendees. The system doles out discounts, VIP Access etc. in exchange for social sharing. An attendee shares the event on twitter or facebook, and they are guaranteed 40% off their ticket. All the rules are set by you, and you not only get additional publicity, but an easy ticketing platform.

2. Instagram Booth
BYO Booth is a photo booth platform based on Instagram. All you need to do is set up an Instagram hashtag for your event and the software will look for attendees pictures. You can then decide to stream them on a slideshow, create your own living wall at your event, post them to Facebook or print them. Pretty simple, yet extremely interactive and helpful for picture collection at events.

3. Refynr
The Refynr platform provides the technology for event producers to display live tweets on large screens during events. Producers can also create an interface for attendees to check or send tweets directly via a Twitter login. Great for conferences that require live tweet walls as well as other events where you want to capture the buzz. Just remember, live tweet walls means un-curated discussion...you can't control what is being said about your event, product etc.

2 Must See Brand Marketing Infographics

So, I always love sharing information and tidbits I pick up along my daily journey of reading blogs, tweets, posts and sites. I found these two infographics really interesting - thanks for sharing Fresh Peel!

Market Research Gets Social
All about how marketers use research and data to discover how to drive sales. Not a new concept, but it's always great to see the numbers come alive. Forexample:

  • 60% of people learn about a brand through social media when researching a product via 3+ digital means.
  •  1 out of every 5 minutes: time online spent on social networks and blogs
  •  90% of consumers trust peer recommendations

 Believable Branding
Following on the notion that 90% of people surveyed for the first infographic trust peer recommendations, this graphic is all about believable branding and how much consumers really trust the marketing that is going on around them. Another interesting read:

T Mobile Hit on Viral Video Friday

Happy Summer Friday Everyone!

Here are this week's hottest viral videos. There are some truly great ones this week!

I wanted to share the  most recent viral hit from T Mobile. The brand has pulled out some great stunts in the past. This one, was unfortunately an angry customer gone awry and put T Mobile on the bad side of the viral video wave. The video was shot on a handset and made to look like reality tv. A man is captured on video after being refused a refund in a store. He goes crazy and smashes up the shop, including spraying the place with fire extinguishers. All while a large crowd watches.

The video received over a million views in just 24 hours! What do you think? Will this have a negative impact on T Mobile, or is this publicity?

Marketing and Habits

Slipping this great infographic in for the last post of this week. I will continue with some great marketing campaign coverage next week. I saw this really interesting stat this morning and wanted to pass it on:

88% of adults in the US have a cell phone, 57% have a laptop, 19% own an e-reader, and 19% have a tablet.

The above info comes at a time when I am blasting through one of the most interesting reads I have had in a long time: The Power of Habit. Knowing the psychology of marketing along with stats like these, we should all take a moment to think about our marketing campaigns and tweak them strategically.

Also, check out the below graphic. The Power and Growth of Mobile Marketing.  Stay dry today! Check back tomorrow for Viral Friday.

The Invisible Ad - A Unique Audience Capture

I can’t resist posting about great campaigns. I really like this ad campaign by LYNX Sunglasses. The invisible ad campaign was a concept created in an abandoned house in Sydney. All of the windows in the house were replaced with LED screens. To anyone passing by, the house looked silent and lifeless. However, if you put your LYNX sunglasses on, the house turned into an ad. Albeit a little steamy, I think the campaign is engaging and different. A unique way to capture an audience.

Coca-Cola Misfires: A Classic Case of Do Your Home Work

Who doesn't love the NCAA and a little March Madness. So many brands see it as a way to capture a new or their supreme target audience. In this particular instance, Coca-Cola took their stunt a little too far for New Orleans. Whether it was a matter of lack of homework, or thinking they could get away with it...unfortunately it backfired and left the mega brand back pedaling. A place you don't want to be when you spend money on a campaign.

Supposed to be a Guerrilla Marketing stunt, Coca-Cola employed an ad agency to work on their campaign. The ad agency hired graffiti artists to stencil and paint red logo and taglines on sidewalks and public surfaces throughout the city of New Orleans. Little did anyone involved in the campaign know, but the graffiti violated a number of city ordinances, including the baring of posted or painted advertisements on any street, sidewalk, trees, public building etc.

City officials ordered Coca-Cola to remove the campaign with power washing by last Friday afternoon. Not only was the city upset, residents were too. A large number of residents expressed outrage at the idea that the brand defaced their city. One of the ugly parts of this story is that Coca-Cola takes no responsibility for the campaign - and blames it all on their ad agency. Saying the agency exceeded their directions.

It's sad because, you know that if the campaign had been a hit, Coca-Cola would have taken all the credit for it. Ever seen a brand side marketer let an agency take full control over a project with out approvals? No? Me neither.

My thoughts on this are simple:

1. Do your homework. Know what you can and can't do, and make sure you weigh your options. New Orleans is place still trying to rebuild itself after Katrina. Do you really want to be the brand that defaces the city?

2. Work closely with your agencies. Make sure that you work as a close team. No surprises. Your agency and in-house marketing, PR and advertising departments should be extensions of one another.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

You Can Never Be Too Generous - Buy Chocolate with Good Deeds Instead of Cash

I loved this concept so much, that I had to post about it. Danish chocolate brand Anthon Berg recently opened a pop up chocolate shop, where people paid with the promise of good deeds instead of cash. To inspire people to be generous - The Generous Store - in Copenhagen priced it's chocolates with 30 different good deeds. Some of the deeds included:

Serve breakfast in bed to your loved one.
Help clean your friend's house.
Don't criticize your girlfriend's driving for a week.

The store had a line of people waiting for up to one and half house just to place an order. Such a great way to inspire people to be see the benefits of being generous, and also create some buzz.  I hope their brand is authentic and lives up to this promotion.

For more info check out Anthon Berg's Facebook page.
